Privacy Policy
Last updated 17 August 2026
This policy covers the Viewport website and the Viewport macOS app, both operated by The Resonance.
The short version
Viewport has no user accounts. Your recordings never leave your Mac. We never receive your card details. What we hold is a record that a purchase happened, the licence key it produced, and an anonymised fingerprint of the Macs that key is activated on - because that is what a two-device licence requires in order to exist.
What we collect, and why
When you buy
Payment is taken by Stripe, on Stripe’s own hosted checkout page. Your card number never touches our servers and we could not retrieve it if we wanted to.
Stripe returns to us, and we store:
- your email address, so we can send you your licence key;
- your name, if you gave one;
- the amount, the currency, and the two-letter country code from your billing address, which we need for tax records;
- Stripe’s own identifiers for the session and the payment, so a refund or a dispute can be matched to the right purchase.
We do not create an account for you. There is no password, no profile, and nothing to sign in to. A purchase record is the whole of what we hold about a customer.
When you activate
Activating a licence sends us the licence key, a salted, one-way hash of your Mac’s hardware identifier, and optionally the machine name, macOS version and app version so support can make sense of a problem. The raw hardware identifier is never transmitted and never stored - only the hash, which cannot be reversed back into it.
This exists for one reason: a licence covers two Macs, and counting to two requires being able to tell one Mac from another. After activation, the app verifies itself offline against a signed token and only contacts us again every few weeks to check that the licence has not been revoked.
When you use the app
Your recordings, the sites you load, and the files you export stay on your Mac. Viewport does not upload them, does not proxy them, and has no server to send them to.
When you visit this website
We use privacy-respecting analytics to understand which pages people read and which links they follow - page paths, referrers, approximate country, and device type. We do not build advertising profiles and we do not sell anything to anyone. The vendors are listed below.
If you give us your email through the footer form, we use it to send you occasional Viewport updates and nothing else. Every one of those emails has an unsubscribe link.
Who else processes your data
- Stripe - payments, tax and refunds.
- Neon - the database holding purchase and licence records.
- Vercel - hosting for this website, and its aggregate traffic analytics.
- Resend - delivery of the licence-key email.
- PostHog and Google Analytics - website usage analytics.
How long we keep it
- Purchase records - seven years. This is a tax requirement, not a preference, and it is the one item on this page we cannot delete on request while the period is running.
- Licence and activation records - for as long as the licence is valid, since the licence is the thing they describe.
- Activation diagnostics - pruned automatically after a short window. They exist to answer “is activation broken?”, which is a question about this week.
- Newsletter subscriptions - until you unsubscribe.
Your rights
If you are in the UK, the EU, or a jurisdiction with comparable law, you can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, or object to how we use it. Write to support@theresonance.studio and we will respond within 30 days.
Because there are no accounts, the email address on your purchase is how we find your records. Quote it, or the licence key, and we can help; without either we have no way to locate you, which is a consequence of collecting as little as we do.
Children
Viewport is a professional design tool and is not directed at children under 16. We do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes materially we will update the date at the top and, where the change affects existing customers, email the address on the purchase.
